South Africa's confirmed Covid-19 cases increase to 276 242, deaths to 4 079

As of Sunday, the number of confirmed coronavirus (Covid-19) cases in South Africa was 276 242, with 12 058 new cases identified. The number of Covid-19-related deaths increased by 108, bringing the total to 4 079, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize said.

The provincial breakdown was as follows: 

Eastern Cape - 50 300 (18.2 percent)

Free State - 6 224 (1.9)

Gauteng - 98 431 (35.6)

KwaZulu-Natal - 25 572 (9.3)

Limpopo - 3 014 (1.1)

Mpumalanga - 3 977 (1.4)

North West - 9 924 (3.6)

Northern Cape  - 1 401 (0.5)

Western Cape - 78 399 (28.4 percent)

Unknown - 0 (0.0)

A total of 2 154 391 tests had been processed to date, of which 45 821 had been conducted since the previous report on Saturday.

"Regrettably, we report a further 108 Covid-19-related deaths - seven from KwaZulu-Natal, 15 from the Western Cape, 22 from the Eastern Cape, and 64 from Gauteng. This brings the total number of Covid-19-related deaths to 4 079. We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased, The number of recoveries is 134 874, which translates to a recovery rate of 48.8 percent," Mkhize said.

The provincial breakdown was as follows:

Eastern Cape - 686 deaths and 31 686 recoveries

Free State - 19 and 681

Gauteng - 644 and 32 958

KwaZulu-Natal - 280 and 6 021

Limpopo - 33 and 1 147

Mpumalanga - 22 and 910

North West - 36 and 2 191

Northern Cape - 11 and 310

Western Cape - 2 348 deaths and 59 070 recoveries
