SCOPA SATISFIED AFTER MEETING SABC INTERIM BOARD AND SIU

27th June 2017

The Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) is happy with its meeting with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) Interim Board and the Special Investigating Unit (SIU).

Scopa is satisfied that the Interim Board is making progress in sorting out challenges faced by the SABC, particularly in relation to procurement issues. Scopa has requested the Interim Board to supply the Committee with the list of evergreen contracts and what the Interim Board is going to do to regularise them and hold officials concerned to account.

Scopa is also happy that the process of obtaining proclamation for the SIU to investigate corruption at the SABC is at its final stages – and is only awaiting the signature of President Jacob Zuma. The SIU investigation is going to be comprehensive and all-encompassing, covering the period from April 2012 to date.

On Wednesday, Scopa will be visiting the head office of the Compensation Fund to look at the audit outcome of their financials. The Compensation Fund has received disclaimers of audit opinion for many years with high levels of irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure and a high number of backlogs in processing claims.

Details of the meeting are as follows:
Date:  Wednesday, 28 June 2017
Time:  09:00
Venue: Compensation Fund Head Office
