SALGA President Bheke Stofile

The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) wishes to convey its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, comrades, and ex-colleagues of former SALGA Deputy President, Sebenzile Ngangelizwe who passed away on Wednesday, 29 March 2023.

Ngangelizwe, 60, previously served as Executive Mayor of Lejweleputswa District Municipality, and will be remembered as a committed political activist who dedicated his life as a servant of the people. In September 2021, he was appointed as one of SALGA’s two Deputy Presidents to share the responsibility of leading the organization towards the 2021 local government elections.

His political career kickstarted underground during the late 1970s and he began serving in SALGA's leadership structures in 2008 as the SALGA Free State Provincial Chairperson until 2016. During those years, he served as Executive Mayor of Lejweleputswa District Municipality until April 2010. Later in that year, he was redeployed to serve as the Executive Mayor of Matjhabeng Local Municipality until July 2016. He served as one of two Deputy Presidents of the SALGA National Executive Committee (NEC) until the organisation’s elective conference in 2022.

During his tenure as the executive political head at Lejweleputswa, Ngangelizwe is attributed with bringing stability and turning the municipality around from attaining qualified audit reports to an unqualified audit report for the 2008/2009 financial year.

SALGA, on behalf of local government, lowers its banner in honour of one of the stalwarts of local government. Ngengelizwe is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Hamba Kahle…Lala Ngoxolo!
