SA records 110 new confirmed Covid-19 deaths and 1 862 new infections

South Africa recorded 1 862 new Covid-19 infections by Wednesday, along with 110 new confirmed Covid-19-related deaths.

According to a statement by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, the country recorded a cumulative total of 1 507 448 confirmed Covid-19 cases by Wednesday.

The total number of healthcare workers vaccinated under the Sisonke Protocol is now 41 809.

Gauteng remains the most affected province with 403 074 confirmed cases. KwaZulu-Natal has recorded 327 760 confirmed cases to date, the Western Cape 276 746 cases and the Eastern Cape 193 773 cases.

KwaZulu-Natal recorded the most confirmed active cases with 9 730, followed by the Free State with 6 737 cases and the Western Cape with 6 495 cases.

The national recovery rate is 94%, with 1 422 622 recoveries recorded.

To date, 8 967 460 tests have been completed, with 34 510 tests conducted in the past 24 hours, Mkhize said on Wednesday evening.

Mkhize also reported a further 110 confirmed Covid-19-related deaths, of which 61 were recorded in the Free State, 17 in the Western Cape, 12 in Gauteng, seven in KwaZulu-Natal, seven in Mpumalanga, five in the Eastern Cape and one in the Northern Cape.

This brings the total to 49 523 confirmed deaths.

"We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased," Mkhize said.
