Revitalising Botshabelo Cemetery Road for safe journeys

26th October 2023

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality recently conducted an oversight on the deteriorating road leading to Botshabelo Cemetery. This vital route, frequented by mourners during funeral processions and tombstone unveilings, is in an alarming state, prompting a surge in public transport usage as private vehicles face damage due to treacherous conditions.

As drivers manoeuvre to evade potholes, the risk of horrific accidents looms large, posing a significant threat to the safety of all road users. Undertakers, burdened by this hazardous route, bear substantial financial strain repairing their vehicles, exacerbating their challenges during an already sensitive time.

Weekends witness a surge in activity, amplifying the strain on the road, as Botshabelo possesses only one graveyard site. This congestion not only intensifies the wear and tear on the road but also adds to the frustration of mourners and residents alike.

Former Mangaung Deputy Mayor, Mapaseka Nkoane pledged to address this pressing issue during an interview last year. Regrettably, this promise remains unfulfilled, leaving the community disheartened and concerned about their safety.

We urge the Municipality to promptly respond to our Rule 38 question, providing a comprehensive plan and timeline for the road's repair. Our resolve is unwavering – Botshabelo Cemetery Road must be revitalised, ensuring safe passage for all mourners and residents.
