Private Equity in Africa: The role of the African Development Bank

Since 1997, the African Development Bank has been at the forefront of supporting businesses in Africa through private equity funds. Private equity provides critical risk capital, as public equity markets continue to navigate the challenges of sophistication, depth, technology and regulations, amongst others.

The African Development Bank strategy is to seek attractive financial returns while ensuring strong additionality and high development impacts. At its core is diversification -- geography, sector, fund sizes, fund investment stage and profile of fund managers.

The Bank’s investment portfolio in private equity has grown significant over the past 20 years, making it an important player in the sector and a driver of Africa’s economic prosperity.
