Power crisis in Harrismith sparks urgent call for action

Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality’s persistent delays in appointing a contractor to address electrical issues in Hardustria, Harrismith following two weeks of no power is a major cause for concern.

Businesses in this area face consistent power outages, not only during loadshedding but also amidst frequent, unplanned electricity infrastructure failures. While some issues are promptly resolved, the majority persist for days, even weeks, leaving the affected businesses in a dire situation.

The repercussions are severe, with businesses struggling to maintain operations, causing disruptions to essential services such as fuel pumping for trucks and amenities for overnight truckers. This protracted power crisis not only disrupts businesses but also poses a threat to the community's well-being. With businesses unable to function optimally, essential services and employment opportunities are compromised, creating a ripple effect that jeopardizes the broader local economy.

The deteriorating state of infrastructure under successive MaP16 and ANC administrations has reached a critical point, causing businesses to close or contemplate closure due to inadequate resources leaving countless staff members facing unemployment, and jeopardizing their livelihoods.

The DA calls for the swift implementation of the Eskom deal, aiming to safeguard businesses and protect the livelihoods of hundreds of staff now at risk of unemployment. The DA pledges to exert continued pressure on officials to urgently secure a contractor for on-site resolution.

To address this crisis, we urge all residents to register to vote in the upcoming National and Provincial elections. By actively participating in the democratic process, we empower ourselves to shape a future where reliable infrastructure and the well-being of our communities are prioritized.
