Poor state of access road affecting services and local economic development in Valdezia

6th October 2021

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Makhado Municipality will write to the Acting Municipal Manager, Mr KM Nemaname, to demand urgent attention to address the poor state of the D3761 road. See photos here, here and here.

This road from Khangela to Valdezia is in a state of disrepair and is the main access road into Valdezia. The road leads to shops, businesses, Valdezia Clinic, schools, the post office and the offices of the Traditional Council The failure to maintain this road is affecting local economic development efforts in the area.

The poor condition of the D3761 also hampers accessibility of services in the area and during the rainy season, the Valdezia area becomes completely inaccessible. Ambulances and other service vehicles do not service the area during this period due to the slippery road conditions.

Residents in the village are also forced to walk long distances as buses and taxis cannot access the area and this often affects the ability of nurses and teachers to report for duty during certain periods.

The failure to maintain the road in an area like Valdezia is unacceptable because it is key to encouraging economic activity and the accessibility of services. It should be a catalyst for job creation particularly for the historically disadvantaged members of our society.

The DA believes the people of Valdezia and surrounding villages deserve better. We are committed to providing well maintained roads and bringing jobs, investment and economic development to the local economy. This is the difference that we can bring to Valdezia. Residents have the opportunity to vote for this change on 1 November to ensure a DA government that gets things done.
