'Operation Clean Audit' pays off for Ekurhuleni metro

The City of Ekurhuleni has received a clean audit from the Auditor-General (AG) for the 2019/2020 financial year, the metro announced on Wednesday.

The audit outcomes were tabled in a council meeting in Germiston on Wednesday.

The audit found the City had no irregular, unauthorised, fruitless or wasteful expenditure for the past three years.

The successful audit is the result of a turnaround strategy regarding the City's finances - coined "Operation Clean Audit" - which was implemented in 2016, said the mayor, Mzwandile Masina.

"The City's audit committee conducted quarterly reviews of internal processes and interrogated the City's performance to ensure that the administration remained committed to improving the control environment," said Masina.

"It is the oversight from the audit committee, which also contributed to the effectiveness of the turnaround strategy, which has translated to the positive audit outcomes."

According to the statement, the City received three unqualified audit opinions over the past three years.

To date, "Operation Clean Audit" has produced a series of positive results for the City of Ekurhuleni.

"I am delighted that our vision of receiving a clean audit opinion from the AG has finally come to fruition. Every cent of the taxpayer's hard-earned money must go towards revitalising our local economy and providing the necessary relief and public services for households to recover from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic," said Masina.

The AG's spokesperson, Africa Boso, was unable to provide specifics on the clean audit, saying a general report on municipalities would be released in May or June.
