No cases of African Horse Sickness in WC since May

11th August 2022

The Western Cape Department of Agriculture has confirmed that there have been no new cases of African Horse Sickness (AHS) in the province since a single case was reported in May.

This was revealed in reply to a parliamentary question from the DA.

It was also confirmed that comprehensive contingency plans are in place to assist farmers and horse breeders. This includes a warning system that allows horse owners to be informed of recent cases, which will allow them to take preventative measures that ensures the export of horses can continue.

Furthermore, the Western Cape Veterinary Services works with the National Government to prevent AHS from entering the Western Cape AHS Control Area from other parts of the country. Together, they have compiled a control policy for the disease and it is clear from the resulting lack of cases that it is very effective.

MPP Andricus van der Westhuizen says: “The DA is pleased that the Provincial Government is taking proactive measures to ensure that our horse trade is not negatively impacted by African Horse Sickness. It is also encouraging to see collaboration between different spheres of government to control and manage AHS, as it serves as an example of what can be achieved when governments works together towards a common goal.”
