NEHAWU condemns the US continued aggression on Cuba

The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union [NEHAWU] condemns the latest acts of imperialist aggression by the United States President, Joe Biden, against the people of Cuba.

President Biden has extended the application of the “Trading with the Enemy Act” against Cuba which continues to violate the human rights of the Cuban People.

The blockade against Cuba is the most brutal system that has ever been applied against any country. It continues to be an obstacle in the development of Cuba. The human damage caused by the blockade is incalculable. It constitutes a massive, flagrant and systematic violation of human rights.

The terrible consequences of the blockade have the deprived the people of Cuba basic necessities. The economy is greatly affected due to the paralysis of tourism, the decrease in production, in foreign investments and the international trade have made it harder for Cuban people to get essential supplies, food and medicine.

The unprecedented levels of hostility using the blockade to deliberately deprive the Cuban people of maintaining and growing their own economy. Through this Draconian law, the US imperialist led government aims to strengthen the blockade on Cuba by preventing other countries from trading with Cuba through being bullied by the US threat of sanctions.

All sanctions imposed on Cuba must cease. These goes against the international law and despise the opinion of the international community. We urge the South African government to strengthen trade ties with Cuba, strengthen solidarity through exchange of knowledge and not be intimidated by US imperialist aggression.

NEHAWU condemns the consistent bullying of the US and its agencies on Cuba and reiterates its solidarity with the heroic people of Cuba. We demand the end of the blockade and sanctions against Cuba.
