After seven years in mainstream politics, former Johannesburg mayor Dr Mpho Phalatse has resigned as a councillor of the City of Johannesburg with effect from September 30 but she remains “a loyal member” of the Democratic Alliance (DA).

Phalatse served as the City of Joburg mayor but was stripped of her mayoral chain last year when the African Transformation Movement, African Independent Congress and Al Jama-ah joined with the ruling African National Congress to table a motion of no confidence against her.

She reflected that the last seven years as a public representative had been a fulfilling experience.

“I am grateful for the opportunity I have had to serve. I am very proud of the achievements we have had during my tenure as a [municipal manager], the Executive Mayor and an ordinary councillor. My record speaks for itself,” said Phalatse.

She would be returning to the medical field, which she said was highly unpredictable, and as a result, it would be impossible for her to move between healthcare and councillor activities.

Phalaste thanked her fellow colleagues in the City of Johannesburg and reminded them that the rebuilding of the city and the nation was nowhere near over.

“With each of us making their contribution in all the various sectors of society, we will leave a great legacy and prosperous nation for prosterity,” she said.
