More scope and responsibilities as Housing becomes Human Settlement in the City of Joburg

5th July 2022

The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Human Settlements, Cllr Mlungisi Mabaso, is pleased to announce that the Housing Department will now be referred to as the Human Settlements Department.

The change comes as the scope of work and mandate of the department have expanded.

“The department is no longer dealing with just the construction of houses, however, it’s looking comprehensively at Human Settlements. We are taking on new projects and programmes that are in line with the provincial and national government,” said MMC Mabaso.

The name change will increase the scope of work and mandate of the department. It also includes the construction of sites and services to enable households to build their own homes, re-imagining hostels and the eradication thereof, issuing of title deeds and the rollout of bulk infrastructure.

“In the City of Johannesburg, we are responsible for informal settlements upgrades, redevelopment of hostels, making commercial spaces in our developments and providing other amenities in new developments,” add MMC Mabaso.

The name change was approved, with no objections, by the City of Joburg Council in June and is effective from 1 July 2022. It is in line with the National and Provincial Departments of Human Settlements who used to be called Housing.
