Minerals Council South Africa pays tribute to Peter Matlare

9th March 2021

The Minerals Council South Africa would like to add its voice to the many tributes paid to Peter Matlare, who passed away on Sunday as a result of COVID-19 complications.

While Peter is best known in the business community for his executive roles at Absa, Tiger Brands and the SABC, less well known is the fact that he spent a number of his early years in the mining industry and, in particular, at the then Chamber of Mines in the late 1990’s.

Roger Baxter, CEO of the Minerals Council remembers Peter as “a kind man, a very articulate, astute and capable leader” working in the communications and public affairs spheres at the then Chamber. All those who recall him from those days remember his decency, absolute integrity and the early signs of talent that left no one surprised at the heights he eventually reached. Only COVID-19 has halted further growth in his career and his inestimable contribution to the development and the people of South Africa and the African continent.

Says Baxter: “We are all deeply saddened by Peter’s untimely passing. He was an incredible talent whose life was cut short too soon.”

The Minerals Council extends its deepest condolences to Peter’s wife Nomvula, his daughters, other family members, friends and colleagues.
