Mineral Resources and Energy Committee set to hold public hearings on ERA Bill in Free State and North West

The Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources and Energy will from tomorrow, Friday, 26 January 2024, hold public hearings on the Electricity Regulations Amendment (ERA) Bill [B23-2023] in Free State’s Thabo Mofutsanyane and Lejweleputswa districts, as well as in North West’s Ngaka Modiri Molema District.
 
In the Thabo Mofutsanyane and Lejweleputswa districts, the public hearings will be held at the Bohlokong New Hall in Bethlehem and Ferdy Meyer Hall in Welkom on Friday and Saturday respectively. In North West’s Ngaka Modiri Molema District, the public hearings will be held at the Zeerust Town Hall in Zeerust on Monday, 29 January 2024. All the public hearings will start from 10:00 to 14:00. 
 
These public hearings are conducted in line with section 59(1)(a) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, which requires the National Assembly to facilitate public involvement in the legislative and other processes of the Assembly and its committees. Members of the media are invited to attend the public hearings.
 
The ERA Bill seeks, amongst other things, to effect amendments to the Electricity Regulation Act to improve its administration; to provide for the establishment of the Transmission System Operator SOC Ltd and also to provide for an open-market platform that will allow for competitive electricity trading.
