Housing across the country remains one of the greatest challenges. The City of Ekurhuleni in light of this, has prioritised building not just houses, but communities which will restore the dignity of the people, displaced in informal settlements.

The City of Ekurhuleni’s plan to build 100 000 houses in the next five years will come to life when MEC for Cooperative Governance, Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements, Paul Mashatile and Mayor Mzwandile Masina leads a sod turning ceremony for a mega housing project in Leeuwpoort, Boksburg on Monday, February 27.

The ground breaking event will make way for the building of about 19 000 houses, characterized by well-designed, sustainable, integrated and secured neighborhoods.

The new development will benefit informal settlement dwellers from Joe Slovo, Ulana Park, Hlahane, Driefontein, Crossroads (Roodekop Ext 3), Vosloorus, Kalamazoo and katlehong.

About R2 billion has been injected into the project, which is set to turn the tide on the challenge of informal settlements in the City. Ekurhuleni has 119 Informal settlements.

The much awaited construction will begin in July this year, creating 250 job opportunities for the 2017/2018 financial year. This is expected to increase as the project continues.

Leeuwpoort project consists of three integrated residential development areas, with two parts in the North, Parkdene Ext 7 and Reiger Park Ext 19 as well as the Southern part, which is near the Sunward Park area.
