Mayor Phalatse, Multi-Party Government to Object to Eskom’s 20.5% Tariff Hike

20th January 2022

The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Mpho Phalatse, representing the Multi-Party Government, will lodge a formal objection to Nersa in response to Eskom’s request for a 20.5% tariff increase.

The Executive Mayor will be accompanied by the MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, Cllr Michael Sun, and Acting CEO of City Power, Tshifularo Mashava.

Such a tariff hike would simply be unaffordable for Johannesburg residents and small business-owners, who are already buckling under the pressure of a failing economy and ever-increasing unemployment which ultimately leads to dwindling incomes and revenues.

The Multi-Party Government will call on Nersa to reject Eskom’s ridiculous request.

Details of the event are as follows:

Date: Friday, 21 January 2022

Time: 10:30 for 11:00

Venue: Gallagher Convention Centre, 19 Richards Drive, Halfway House, Midrand
