South Africa has recorded 63 more Covid-19 related deaths - 54 in KwaZulu-Natal and nine in the Eastern Cape, according to Health Minister Zweli Mkhize.

None of the deaths were recorded in the past 24 to 48 hours, the health department indicated in its daily update on Sunday evening.

"This brings the total number of Covid-19 related deaths to 18 471," said Mkhize.

"We extend our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased patients," Mkhize added.

According to the updated, the department recorded 1 662 new cases since its previous report, increasing the number of detected Covid-19 cases to 703 793.

There have been 634 543 recoveries, translating to a recovery rate of 90%.
