ICTU: Update on Multichoice retrenchment

The Union would like to confirm that it has received invitation today, with unconditional apology, from Multichoice to join discussion which will be facilitated by the CCMA on Friday the 28th June 2019.

We also confirm that we met with Management delegate, today 24 June 2019.

The Union has submitted the following for consideration and response thereof:
(1) That the current flawed retrenchments process be remedied by total suspension and retracting VSP offer,
(2) That there shall be communication to employees confirming suspension of retrenchments pending proper consultation having been undertaken.
(3) ICTU called for Unions presidency to meet with CEO for urgent “talks about talks”

ICTU have submitted that there is plathora of dismissal cases, and evidence thereof, where employees were targeted by means of harassment due victimization and or placed under difficult circumstances due recruitment of ICTU since 2018. This, the Union submitted that their actions are a violation of employees constitutional right to freedom of association.

We therefore submitted that management issues a communique to employees to inform them that employees are freely allowed to join any Union of their choice and should employee feel victimized for his/her participation in the Union should refer matter to both HR/ER and the Union.
Management has undertaken to consider communicating the message to employees.

The Union position:
We remain committed to participate to a process which is not already predetermined and what Multichoice has done in the process will have difficulty to defend without acknowledging that their actions has material bearing in the retrenchments as oppose to Technological advancement and customer options of preference to self-service.

ICTU remain open to proper engagement between two parties by principle underpinned by transparency, respect and honesty.
