Gauteng to launch a massive jobs and skills development programme

14th June 2017

Premier David Makhura, provincial cabinet and partners will on Wednesday, 15 June 2017 launch the Tshepo 1 Million programme to empower one million young people through skills training, job placement and entrepreneurship development.

The programme, to be launched at the youth expo in Nasrec Expo Centre, is a Gauteng Provincial Government’s flagship programme for the youth to find sustainable jobs, trained and skilled in areas of high demand and accredited in entrepreneurship amongst others things.

The Tshepo initiative was first launched in 2014 with the intention to empower 500 000 young people through skills training and entrepreneurship development. The programme has been increased to empower one million young people based on its success and the enthusiasm shown by private sector companies.

Premier Makhura said the launch was about a political message on what the provincial government was trying to achieve with Tshepo1 Million Programme.

“We would want to use it to ignite a new social compact and galvanise a new partnership that focuses on giving hope to the youth of Gauteng by tackling youth unemployment.  My call to action is being answered by private sector partners who will be signing up the pledge,” said Makhura.

More than 20 companies such as Coca-Cola, Hollard, Microsoft SA and Shanduka Black Umbrellas have committed to work with government to give hope to unemployed young people in the province
