The Commission of Inquiry into Taxi Violence wishes to inform the public that it is now compiling its report to the Gauteng Premier David Makhura as per its terms of reference and will no longer conduct public hearings. The final report will be presented to the Premier of Gauteng on or before the 31st of January 2021.

As you may be aware that Premier Makhura, had established the Commission referred to in terms of Proclamation 101 of 2019 issued on 13 September 2019 and its brief was to investigate the underlying causes of taxi violence, make findings and recommendations.

As per the amended Proclamation promulgated in the Gauteng Provincial Gazette No. 84 of 2020 issued on 08 October 2020, the Commission must complete its work and submit its report with findings and recommendations in writing to the Premier Makhura on or before 31 January 2021.

The Commission is confident that the information and evidence gathered thus far will be sufficient to address all matters relating to the Commission’s terms of reference.

The Chairperson of the Commission, Mr Justice Jeremiah Shongwe wishes to take this opportunity to thank all organisations and individuals who participated and provided the Commission with valuable information.

“Despite the best efforts, it has not been possible to provide a platform for all the interested parties to appear before the Commission due to constraints beyond the Commission’s ability”, said Justice Shongwe.

“As you may be aware that a broad scope of stakeholders had to be considered for evidence for the Commission to cover all the elements of the terms of reference”, added Justice Shongwe.

The Commission wishes to give its assurance to all those who made submissions that all the information and evidence will be considered in the preparation of the final report.
