The Liquor Traders Association (GLF) fully supports the Government’s measures to curb the spread of the Coronavirus. We welcome the lockdown imposed by the Government as the number of infections in South Africa continues to grow to over 700.

Though we are in full support of the Government’s efforts, we remain deeply concerned about the impact of the closures on small, township-based businesses, and their employees.  Every liquor outlet employs two to three people whose livelihoods, and those of their families, will be profoundly impacted during this time.

As the GLF, we appeal to the Government, financial sector and banks specifically, to support these traders during this unprecedented time of crisis.  While we recognise that all businesses are likely to suffer great losses and face certain ruin, nowhere will this be felt more acutely than in the previously disadvantaged sector of the market, who operate largely in our townships.

GLF strongly appeals to its members, and all liquor traders in South Africa, to heed Government’s call during the lockdown and to comply with all measures announced by the Government to curb the spread of the virus.  We are all in this together.  If we all respect and comply with the measures, we will get through this a lot faster.

Be safe. Wash your hands. Respect the Law.
