Former Okhahlamba Speaker to appear in court for allegedly raping a minor

The DA in uThukela will tomorrow, 01 December 2022, attend the court case, at the Bergville Magistrates court, involving a minor who was allegedly raped by former, ANC tenure, Okhahlamba Speaker.

The DA will use this time to provide support to the alleged victim and her family during this difficult and troubled time. We are encouraged by the victim's bravery for being able to stand up for her rights and fighting to bring this alleged sex offender to book.

During his time in Okhahlamba, the DA brought two motions of no confidence in him as the Speaker when similar allegations were made. Unfortunately, he was able to use the support of his then majority ANC caucus, and the power and influence of his Office, to circumvent defeat the motions of no confidence.

The then Police Case was also later withdrawn by the alleged victim, and one can only assume that he was able to broker a deal using his influence and riches.

It is therefore shocking to learn that he is now in the employment of the Okhahlamba local municipality.

It is concerning that Officials do not take allegations around Gender-Based Violence seriously and that they appoint an alleged sex offender in a position of youth involvement.

The DA will write to the MEC of CoGTA, Sihle Zikalala, raising our concerns on his appointment in the employment of the now OPEMA-run Okhahlamba municipality and call for his immediate suspension.
