Nosipho Siwisa-Damasane exemplifies the value that women can deliver in key areas of the South African economy.

In the past six years, Nosipho has led the Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) to great heights, first as CEO and now as chairperson, a service she provides pro Deo, a very patriotic gesture.

The ‘can-do’ attitude of RBCT under her watch is highlighted by the terminal last year setting yet another coal export record, despite the loss of 38 port days to bad weather.

Nosipho’s decision to go undercover in 2013 to experience first-hand the day-to-day challenges of RBCT employees, is indicative of her participative management style.

She showed great boldness by announcing RBCT’s equipment replacement project at a time of low coal price, and then great astuteness by being able to announce its commissioning when the coal price had turned back up.

Journalists like myself, who call at the terminal regularly for performance updates, invariably come away with headlines of new export records, expansion projects and praiseworthy modernisation – all with Nosipho at the forefront.

She has always displayed utmost appreciation for the huge importance to South Africa of maximum cooperation between RBCT, Transnet Freight Rail and Transnet National Ports Authority. Indicative of the depth of the goodwill within this public–private partnership is the fact that RBCT’s global award of ‘Bulk Logistics Port Terminal of the Year’ followed its nomination by Transnet.

The proof of the success of this public–private partnership is the significant foreign exchange that it catalyses each year for the benefit of the South African people.

Hats off to Nosipho, who heads a key South African export platform that is 29.54% black-owned and 6.52% black women-owned – a reflection of a nation in the midst of praiseworthy transformation.
