FEDUSA on the National Professional Teachers' Organisation of South Africa Congress (NAPTOSA)

8th November 2022

The Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) congratulates its affiliate, the National Professional Teachers' Organisation of South Africa (NAPTOSA) on the convening of its National Congress that gets underway in Johannesburg from today (08.11.2022)

The congress under the theme “Professional autonomy- defend it or lose it” is a reminder to society of the role that teachers play in not only educating learners but shaping communities. Among issues that will be dissected at the gathering is the future of digitisation in the public service, with focus on the promotion of human rights. We believe that this conversation is timely as lessons gained during the Covid19 pandemic demonstrated the need to address this with urgency.

Discussions will also be held over the two-day congress assessing the role of trade unions in Climate Change and the Just Transition. Fedusa has been proactively developing policy positions on this matter since talks started at the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac). We believe that Naptosa’s decision to pay attention to the role of trade unions will set a clear path for how workers can and will continue to form part of the solution-oriented groupings in society.

Fedusa General Secretary Riefdah Ajam will address the Congress this morning, with Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga among speakers billed to address the gathering.
