The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of South Africa on Friday announced that it had passed the 90% voting station capture mark, as South Africans eagerly wait to see if their respective political parties managed to secure seats in Parliament.

The IEC noted that the Northern Cape was the leading province in capturing results with all its 770 voting stations counted, followed by the Western Cape at 99.6%, North West at 99.4%, Mpumalanga at 99% and Eastern Cape at 97.59%.

“Provinces with the most results still awaiting capture were Gauteng at 81.99%, Limpopo at 82%, Free State 82.93% and KwaZulu-Natal at 83.56%.”

The IEC said of the 13-million votes captured by 10:30 am, 453 265 were special votes and 179 511 were spoilt ballots.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to visit the centre today to see the closing stages of the results process.
