South Africa is hosting the 84th version of the International Commission On Large Dams (ICOLD) conference from Sunday 15 May 2016 to Friday 20 May 2016. This event comprising of various delegates from across the globe will be held in Sandton, Johannesburg, with the Department of Water and Sanitation as the main host.

The conference is famously known for hosting the world's who's who in large dam construction, which is one of its main objectives. This year's meeting won't be different.

South Africa is not well-endowed with major rivers and is a semi-arid country with an average rainfall of about 500 mm which is about half of the world average of 860 mm. Water engineers in South and Southern Africa have had to implement innovative water projects to meet the increasing demands for water for human use, food production, industries and mines, energy and the environment. Large inter-basin transfer projects have been constructed in association with neighbouring countries.

The Conference is held each year in one of the commission's member states home.
