ANC announces Nomusa Dube-Ncube as KZN Premier candidate

The African National Congress has elected KwaZulu-Natal Finance MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube as the person they want to take over from KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala following his resignation last week.

If appointed, Dube-Ncube would be the first female premier in KwaZulu-Natal.

Dube-Ncube was selected as the ANC’s preferred candidate following an interview process undertaken by the party’s national executive committee.

Accepting her candidacy, she promised to work with all structures to ensure that the policies outlined by the ANC unite South Africans.

Ramaphosa says gender-based violence remains among SA’s biggest obstacles in achieving gender equality

In his weekly letter to the nation, President Cyril Ramaphosa pointed out that the prevalence of gender-based violence remained one of the country’s biggest obstacles in achieving full and meaningful gender equality.

He said as South Africans worked together to tackle gender-based violence, progress made by the country in building a non-sexist society must not be diminished.

Tomorrow South Africa will celebrate Women’s Day, which commemorates the day in 1956 when thousands of women marched on the Union Buildings to protest against apartheid pass laws.

Ramaphosa added that the country must celebrate the many achievements of women and pay tribute to those who continue to lead the way.

ANC calls for end to ‘apartheid killings’ in Israel

The African National Congress has condemned and denounced the attacks by the Israeli army in Gaza against Palestinians.

The party is calling on the international community to use the necessary laws against Israel for what it says are “gross violations of the fundamental rights of Palestinian people”.

Israel has unleashed a wave of air attacks on Gaza since Friday, killing at least 31 people, including six children.

More than 260 people have been injured.

ANC national spokesperson Pule Mabe said the continual colonisation and attacks by apartheid Israel on Palestinians is a violation of global human rights.
