SAA to go under care and maintenance until funding found

Struggling state-owned airline South African Airways will be put under "care and maintenance" until funding discussions are completed, the airline's administrators said.

A company's assets can be put under care and maintenance to keep them in good condition when they are not being used.

The administrators added in a notice to affected parties that certain funders were willing to provide a portion of the funds for the airline's restructuring plan and that they were engaging with the government on the remaining funding needed.

fewer than 1 000 new Covid-19 cases reported

Another 81 people have died of Covid-19-related illness, the Department of Health said, bringing the total number of deaths to 16 667.

Eight were from the Eastern Cape, 10 from the Northern Cape, 11 from KwaZulu-Natal, 28 from Gauteng, five from Limpopo, eight from the North West, six from the Western Cape and five from the Free State.

The number of recoveries is 606 520 - a recovery rate of 90% - out of 672 572 cases.

UN urges unity and peace during Ivory Coast elections

After a week-long visit to Ivory Coast, the United Nations secretary-general's special representative for West Africa and the Sahel region, has urged Ivorians to preserve unity and peace ahead of the presidential election.

UN’s Mohamed Ibn Chambas said his visit was to reaffirm the UN's commitment to achieve a peaceful, inclusive, transparent and credible presidential vote on October 31.

Last month, the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called for peace following violence against President Alassane Ouattara's third term bid. He has been serving as the head of state since 2010.
