Ramaphosa remembers anti-apartheid stalwart Aziz Pahad

President Cyril Ramaphosa has paid homage to anti-apartheid veteran Aziz Pahad, remembering him as a "consummate diplomat" and global freedom fighter.

Pahad died on Wednesday night at the age of 82. In a statement, the president extended his condolences to the Pahad family.

Pahad's death followed that of his brother, former Minister in the Presidency, Essop Pahad, in July.

ANC national spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri said Pahad would be remembered as a patriot, freedom fighter, and servant of the people throughout his life.

The Economic Freedom Fighters also sent condolences to the Pahad family.

 

Flood-ravaged Western Cape appeals to Ramaphosa, SANDF and Sassa for help

Flood-ravaged municipalities in the Western Cape are trying to get their ducks in a row as they quantify the extent of the damage to motivate why the National Disaster Management Centre and others sectors should provide them with funding.

According to Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning MEC Anton Bredell, securing aid is the provincial government's priority.

Bredell has written to President Cyril Ramaphosa, the National Department of Social Development, and the South African Social Security Agency to request assistance.

The City of Cape Town said 3 986 structures and 4 449 people need help. Damage assessments still need to be carried out in 30 areas.

 

ANC defeated by IFP and EFF in KZN and North West by-elections

The Inkatha Freedom Party continued its winning streak against the African National Congress in by-elections when it beat the governing party in Ward 13 of uMhlathuze Local Municipality.

The IFP claimed victory with 53.38% of the tally, ahead of the ANC's 46.01% and the EFF's 0.61%.

The by-election outcome sets the scene for political dynamics which, on the face of it, appear to favour the IFP.

Meanwhile, in the North West-based Maquassi Hills Local Municipality's Ward 3, the EFF's Lehlohonolo Metoa pipped the ANC's Kediemetse Lefera by securing 46.89% of the tally.

Lefera was second with 43.77%, followed by the Patriotic Alliance's Kgomotso Lebese, who garnered 9.28%.

Mpho Selete of the Active African Christians United Movement only managed one out of the 1 702 votes in Ward 3.
