Ramaphosa says UN should be strengthened as it begins 75th session

President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for the strengthening of bodies such as the United Nations as South Africa prepares to virtually participate in 75th session of the UN’s General Assembly.

In his weekly address to the nation, Ramaphosa said countries must use this anniversary to push ahead with the reform of the UN and particularly its Security Council, which he says does not give equal voice to the different regions of the world.

He said South Africa will continue to advocate for Africa to have permanent representation on the UN Security Council.

 

Nehawu set to protest outside Union Buildings for frontline workers

The National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union's NEC is set to protest outside the Union Buildings today.

They want President Cyril Ramaphosa to respond "adequately and positively" to their demands, detailed in a memorandum submitted earlier this month.

NEHAWU’s demands are related to health workers who they say are "getting infected by Covid-19 on a daily basis" and were allegedly "denied their salary increases and bonuses”.

 

Algeria announces early legislative election

Algeria will hold early legislative elections after a referendum on a new constitution planned for November 1, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said.

Elected last December, Tebboune has pledged to carry out political and economic reforms to meet demands raised during mass protests that forced the resignation of veteran president Abdelaziz Bouteflika in April 2019.

Algerians will vote in November on a new constitution that includes giving the parliament and prime minister a greater role and providing more freedoms.
