Govt commits to provide SAA with R10.5-billion

The South African government has told administrators of South African Airways that there is a "clear cabinet commitment" to provide the state airline with R10.5-billion of funds.

The administrator told an SAA creditor meeting that the government's communication had the support of National Treasury but the timelines and mechanisms for the funding were yet to be finalised.

ANC North West interim structure to discuss failed attempt to recall mayors and speakers

The North West ANC's interim provincial committee is set to meet, following days of attempting to remove 15 officials across five municipalities in the province.

The IPC had given five troikas, which are made up of the mayors, speakers and chief whips, a Wednesday deadline to vacate their offices.

It has been reported that at least six had submitted resignations, but IPC spokesperson Kenny Morolong refused to confirm the number, saying the provincial working committee would collate and put together a report on how the week unfolded.

Somali president names premier as elections loom

Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed has picked political newcomer Mohamed Hussein Roble as prime minister, his office said on Friday, cementing power around the presidency ahead of elections due next year.

Roble replaces Hassan Ali Khaire, who was sacked in July after a power struggle over whether to delay a national election due next year.

An African Union peacekeeping force set up in 2017 has clawed back control of much of the country from Islamist insurgents, giving space for fragile political institutions to emerge.
