Business confidence at its worst this year

And, EFF says land reform will honour Steve Biko’s legacy

The chairperson of the judicial commission of inquiry into State capture, Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, is expected to deliver his decision on applications for leave to cross-examine witnesses.

Zondo will deliver his decision on Thursday at 10:00 am.

Last week, Zondo expressed concerns over the Gupta brothers' applications from abroad to cross-examine witnesses.

This was after advocate Mike Hellens, for Ajay Gupta, said his client was willing to testify and wanted to cross-examine witnesses from a location outside South Africa.

Business confidence in South Africa has declined by 4.2 index points - measuring 90.5 in August compared to 94.7 in July 2018 - the lowest level this year.

The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry released its Business Confidence Index today. The BCI does not reflect business sentiment, but rather how businesses are experiencing the present business environment.

Sacci said among the things that impacted negatively on the business environment were merchandise export volumes, a weaker rand exchange rate and higher inflation.

Expropriating land without compensation will be honouring anti-apartheid activist, Steve Biko's legacy of black consciousness, the Economic Freedom Fighters have said.

EFF spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said in a statement that there were no grounds for black people pride and dignity until black people attain land.

The iconic struggle hero died on this day 41 years ago in the hands of the apartheid regime. He suffered a brain haemorrhage while in the custody of apartheid police and died days later on 12 September 1977, aged 30.

In Biko's commemoration, President Cyril Ramaphosa will on Friday deliver a memorial lecture to honour Biko at the University of South Africa.
