Making headlines: Eskom suspends managers over power station breakdowns, Dr Somadoda Fikeni says ANC and DA will weaken in future and, John Moodey clears the air over sex-for-jobs claims

 

Eskom suspends managers over power station breakdowns

Eskom said on Friday it had suspended managers at two of its power stations after breakdowns which forced the utility to ramp up rolling blackouts earlier this week to avoid tripping the national grid.

Eskom said its group chief executive André de Ruyter suspended the managers at the Tutuka and Kendal stations on Thursday morning pending disciplinary inquiries. 

Further interventions were ongoing at the Kriel and Duvha power stations, said the state-owned company, which supplies around 95 percent of South Africa's electricity.

 

Dr Somadoda Fikeni says ANC and DA will weaken in future

University of South Africa Special Project director Dr Somadoda Fikeni has said in the immediate future South Africa will see the weakening of the two major parties, the ANC and the DA for different reasons.

He was a panellist at an Institute for Security Studies webinar where he said there was no other province as important as Gauteng, as it was populous and its dense population was growing fast.

He said the ANC is being weakened by factionalism which has become vicious for obvious reasons.

Dr Fikeni said the DA was fragmenting because it had not found its soul in terms of what policy and what ideological stance it wanted to take.

 

John Moodey clears the air over sex-for-jobs claims

Former DA Gauteng leader, John Moodey has denied that he had left the party to avoid being charged internally in a sex-for-jobs scandal.

Moodey, the long-serving DA provincial leader, announced that he was stepping down as a member of the party on Wednesday, saying he could no longer align himself with the country's main opposition party.

Moodey said he was "compelled" to respond to the charges levelled against him regarding the "facts" of the so-called Ekurhuleni sex-for-jobs scandal.
