Ramaphosa to deploy 10 000 soldiers on election weekend

President Cyril Ramaphosa has authorised the deployment of 10 000 members of the South African National Defence Force for service during the upcoming local government elections, at a cost of just over R47-million.

The deployment is effective from the kick-off of special votes on October 30 until November 3 in cooperation with the South African Police Service for the establishment of a safe and secure environment during the elections.


Speaker of the National Assembly Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and chairperson of the National Council of Provinces Amos Masondo said that they had received correspondence from the President regarding the deployment.

 

City of JHB unveils new plans to wean itself from Eskom
The City of Johannesburg this week unveiled a new plan to accelerate the security of reliable power supply for residents and businesses in the municipality.

Headed by executive mayor Mpho Moerane, the City has launched an energy mix Energy Sustainability Strategy for the municipality, through which the city seeks to increase its capacity to cater for its growing developmental needs.

The new strategy seeks to add an extra 500 MW of gas and solar capacity to the city’s energy mix.
Moerane reiterated that the city was exploring taking over Eskom-supplied areas in Johannesburg, which include Sandton and Soweto.

 

NSFAS applications open Nov 2  

Those wishing to apply for the 2022 National Student Financial Aid Scheme can do so from November 2 until January 7, 2022.

Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation Dr Blade Nzimande is urging those hoping to study at public universities and technical and vocational education and training colleges to apply on time.

He said the demand for student funding has increased now more than ever, owing to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The NSFAS board has given its assurances that the 2022 application process would handle student applications efficiently and seamlessly.
