Making headlines: ANC celebrates after Tania Campbell’s removal, Parliament welcomes R2bn for damaged building repair and, former Eskom boss Matshela Koko, wife and stepdaughter arrested on charges of corruption

 

ANC celebrates after Tania Campbell’s removal

The ANC is claiming victory after Tania Campbell's removal as Ekurhuleni mayor, but the Democratic Alliance, Economic Freedom Fighters and other political parties believe the metro is headed for a catastrophic period of deepening service delivery instability.

Ekurhuleni currently has no mayor or executive committee to govern after Campbell was voted out of office by a slim margin on Wednesday.

A total of 100 councillors supported the ANC's motion for her removal while 93 voted against it.

What lies ahead for the City remains unknown, but a new mayor needs to be elected within seven days.

 

Parliament welcomes R2bn for damaged building repair

Parliament has welcomed Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s announcement of the setting aside of R2-billion for the restoration of the damaged Parliamentary buildings.

On Wednesday Godongwana delivered his Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement at the Cape Town City Hall owing to the fire damage, at a time when the country is facing many challenges that threaten to cripple the economy.

The fire caused extensive damage to key offices, chambers and meeting rooms in the National Assembly and Old Assembly buildings.

Forty-nine-year-old Zandile Mafe, who confessed to the crime, was arrested after the fire broke out. 

 

Eskom boss Matshela Koko, wife and stepdaughter arrested on charges of corruption

The NPA's Investigating Directorate has arrested former Eskom acting CE Matshela Koko, his wife Mosima and his stepdaughter Koketso Choma on charges of corruption.  

The charges relate to a multibillion-rand contract Eskom entered into with Swiss engineering company Asea Brown Boveri in 2015.

ABB subcontracted to a local company, Impulse International, where Choma was a shareholder.

Koko was a senior executive at Eskom at the time.  

The judicial commission of inquiry into State capture, led by Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, found that Koko was “an integral component of the Gupta family’s strategy to capture Eskom".
