Minister Gungubele says ministerial handbook review will be handled by a "neutral structure"

Minister in the Presidency Mondli Gungubele said the review of the ministerial handbook, which outlines perks for ministers and deputy ministers, will be handled by a neutral structure.

The review of the Guide for Members of the Executive follows President Cyril Ramaphosa's recent withdrawal of amendments to the handbook.

The perks would have also seen taxpayers pay fully for water and electricity for officials.

Gungubele said Cabinet welcomed Ramaphosa's withdrawal but called for a review of the ministerial handbook.

 

Civil society urges MPs to reject Electoral Bill

Civil society campaign My Vote Counts is urging MPs to reject the Electoral Amendment Bill, saying if it is passed, Parliament will threaten citizens’ right to vote and cause injustice to the country’s democracy.

The National Assembly will today vote to pass the Bill.

The organisation called on MPs to vote with their conscience and Reject the Bill as it is fatally flawed.

The civil society organisation added that it was clear that little thought had been given to the Bill, despite many civil society organisations raising these flaws to Parliament on many occasions.

 

Cabinet endorses Just Energy Transition Partnership Investment Plan ahead of COP27

Cabinet has officially endorsed the Just Energy Transition Partnership Investment Plan following a presentation it received at its latest meeting.

Cabinet statement notes that the plan outlines the investments required to achieve the decarbonisation commitments made by government, while promoting sustainable development, and ensuring a just transition for affected workers and communities.

In a post-Cabinet briefing Minister in the Presidency Mondli Gungubele said that more details on the plan - which is backed by France, Germany, the US, the UK and the European Union would be provided during a briefing that will be hosted soon by the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Climate Change.
