Mkhize wants powers to restrict citizens' behaviour and movements beyond a state of disaster

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize wants powers to restrict South Africans even when there isn't a national state of disaster in effect.

In a hastily organised meeting of the portfolio committee on health on Tuesday evening, Mkhize presented a set of regulations that would give him powers akin to that which the Disaster Management Act confer on the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister during a state of disaster.

Mkhize told the committee that regulations would be "major ammunition to deal with the pandemic".

 

Ace Magashule calls on government to assist and support military veterans

ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule has called on all spheres of government to address the socio-economic welfare of the uMkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association.

Magashule engaged the leadership of MKMVA in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday and noted unfortunate public engagements and issues concerning the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa, where there was a finding on the legality of security contracts.

He said the government, led by the military veterans' department, should ensure all veterans are assisted and supported to participate in the economic sector and that their welfare was attended to.

 

European Union agrees to help Mozambique tackle insurgency

The European Union has granted Mozambique's request for assistance in tackling a wave of attacks in the country's north by rebels with links to Islamic State, the EU delegation in the southern African country said.

Militant attacks in Cabo Delgado province date to 2017 but the violence has gathered pace this year, with insurgents seizing important towns for brief periods and hitting military and other key targets.

Mozambique wrote to the EU in September to ask for help in training its armed forces to battle the insurgency.
