Making headlines: SCA slams Zuma's private prosecution, Janet Love appointed as an IEC commissioner and, Mapisa-Nqakula tells G20 to not take sides in Israel-Palestine conflict

 

SCA slams Zuma's private prosecution

The Supreme Court of Appeal has confirmed that Jacob Zuma's private prosecution of State advocate Billy Downer and journalist Karyn Maughan was "without foundation", part of his Stalingrad litigation campaign and aimed at delaying, obstructing and preventing his corruption trial.

In a scathing ruling that was supported by SCA President Mahube Molemela and three other SCA judges, Judge Nathan Ponnan dismissed Zuma's appeal against the enforcement of the KwaZulu-Natal High Court's invalidation of his private prosecution. 

Zuma had sought to privately prosecute Downer and Maughan on the basis that his corruption trial prosecutor had violated the National Prosecuting Authority Act by allowing court papers – which contained a note from one of his military doctors – to be shared with the publication by another NPA counsel, Andrew Breitenbach.

 

Janet Love appointed as an IEC commissioner

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced the appointment of civil servant and former anti-Apartheid activist Janet Love as a commissioner of the Independent Electoral Commission.

Love is one of five commissioners appointed for a term of seven years.

The appointment is in accordance with the Electoral Commission Act which indicates that the appointment be made on the recommendation of the National Assembly.

Following a series of interviews, a shortlist of eight candidates was submitted to the National Assembly for consideration and on September 12 the Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs recommended the approval of Love’s nomination by the National Assembly, which agreed to the nomination of September 19.

 

Mapisa-Nqakula tells G20 to not take sides in Israel-Palestine conflict

South Africa’s Parliamentary Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has urged G20 countries to not take sides in the raging conflict between Israel and Palestine, but to rather intervene to stop the war as "no one is a winner".

Speaking during the ninth G20 Parliamentary Speakers' Summit in India, Mapisa-Nqakula warned that if not curbed, the conflict would exacerbate the already deadly situation which had already left many people dead.

Mapisa-Nqakula conveyed South Africa’s full support for a two-State solution, which will ensure that the States of Israel and Palestine live side by side peacefully.
