Ramaphosa says violent crime a threat to community safety and food security

President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for greater coordination and better communication between the South African Police Service, business, farming organisations and communities, as well as integrated communications technologies to increase the success of the rural safety strategy.

Addressing the nation in his weekly letter, Ramaphosa condemned violent crimes on farms in the wake of the murder of Free State farmer Brendin Horner, last week.

Ramaphosa called out vigilantism and urged collaboration between farm watch organisations and community policing forums, with the specific involvement of farmworkers.

He warned against lobby groups labelling killings on farms as “ethnic cleansing” and “genocidal” and said these crimes were a reminder of the levels of violence in the country.

 

New Expropriation Bill submitted to Parliament

A new Land Expropriation Bill, gazetted on Friday and submitted to Parliament, is set to ensure the implementation of land redistribution and agricultural, human settlement and industrial development.

The announcement was made by the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Land Reform, which consists of Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development Thoko Didiza; Minister of Justice Ronald Lamola and the Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure Patricia De Lille.

The new Bill makes provision for land expropriation without compensation under clause 12(3),(4) which looks at cases where it may be just and equitable to not pay compensation for property expropriation, in the interest of the public.

 

Ramaphosa pays tribute to Priscilla Jana

President Cyril Ramaphosa has added his voice to those paying tribute to renowned anti-apartheid struggle lawyer and deputy chairperson of the South African Human Rights Commission Priscilla Jana, who died at the age of 76 on Saturday.

Ramaphosa said South Africa has lost a human rights icon and a formidable legal intellect with Jana's death.

Jana was a former Member of Parliament and South African ambassador to the Netherlands and Ireland.
