No forced public service retrenchments as government readies for Jobs Summit

Government will use the Jobs Summit, starting today, to promise that there will be no forced retrenchments in the 1.3-million-strong public service.

Previous reports said that government was looking to cut state jobs as part of its effort to redirect public spending to infrastructure and other growth-enhancing policies.

The Mail & Guardian first reported in early August that government was planning to cut 30 000 jobs in the public sector, and had set aside R4-billion to start the slimdown.

This will no longer happen, and is likely to be a key trade-off to labour, a powerful partner at the Jobs Summit,  says Madoda Vilakazi, executive director of Nedlac, which is running the presidential jobs extravaganza.

EFF says Minister Nene lied at State capture inquiry

The EFF yesterday dismissed Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene's testimony at the State capture commission of inquiry as lies.

The party said Nene did not reply to its inquiry about his relationship with the controversial Gupta family.

The EFF said it submitted questions to Nene for written replies in Parliament, but instead Nene ''continued with his arrogance'' and undermined Parliament's processes.

The minister testified that the EFF allegations against him were baseless and not true. He added that the EFF's statement on Tuesday that he never replied to their letter was incorrect, because he responded on June 12 this year.

DA charges Bathabile Dlamini with perjury over Sassa saga

The DA has had perjury charges laid against Minister of Women in the Presidency Bathabile Dlamini.

DA MP and social development spokesperson Bridget Masango had the charges laid at the Johannesburg Central police station yesterday

She said the charges followed the "damning" judgment in the social grants saga.

The Constitutional Court asked the National Prosecuting Authority to consider whether Dlamini should be prosecuted for lying under oath during her testimony at Judge Bernard Ngoepe's SA Social Security Agency inquiry.
