Opposition parties say Joburg mayor safe until January;

Opposition parties look forward to January when they say they will bring a fresh motion of no confidence against City of Johannesburg Mayor Mpho Phalatse. 

Yesterday evening, Phalatse survived the motions brought by the opposition minority parties. 

Two other coalition councillors, Nakita Dellwaria from the Democratic Alliance and Lerato Ngobeni from ActionSA, also survived as motions against them were withdrawn.

Yesterday marked the end of the two-day ordinary council sitting. It was also the final sitting of the council, which goes on recess on 8 December.

Johannesburg African National Congress leader Dada Morero said the opposition received word from their leaders that they should withdraw the motions while the ANC and the Economic Freedom Fighters sort out their issues.

 

Sisulu claims rules 'blatantly, if not deliberately' ignored after her exclusion from top 6 nominations

Tourism Minister Lindiwe Sisulu has accused the African National Congress's election committee of "blatantly ignoring rules" and disadvantaging her candidacy for party president.

In a letter addressed to the party's electoral committee chairperson, Kgalema Motlanthe, she lodged a dispute in which she bemoaned her exclusion from the top six nominations.

Her main bone of contention is that she met the 25% threshold of support she requires for nomination, but that her name was excluded.

According to Sisulu, who launched a campaign to run against President Cyril Ramaphosa, her team filed all their nominations from branch general meetings across the country with the suspicion in mind that they could be lost in the pipeline.

 

And, City of Cape Town takes action against officials after arrests for construction sector corruption

The City of Cape Town says it is taking disciplinary action against two officials implicated in fraud.

This came after eight people were arrested in connection with corruption in the construction sector within the City of Cape Town.

Western Cape police said they arrested the eight people yesterday, as part of an investigation into tender fraud within the municipality. Police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa said they were accused of inflating invoices, irregularly paying service providers for construction work not undertaken, and other illicit activities.

The City said the arrests were in connection with alleged fraudulent over-billing by a subcontractor for repairs and maintenance.

Disciplinary charges have been laid against two officials who face charges, according to the City. One of the officials has since resigned.
