South Africa could sell shares in restructured national airline

South Africa could offer to sell shares in the bankrupt national airline, South African Airways, to the public as part of an ambitious new plan to revive the carrier outlined by Finance Minister Tito Mboweni.

The government could bring the various parts of the South African Airways group into one company that would be co-owned by the state, pension funds, individual investors and an operational partner, Mboweni said.

The plan comes as SAA’s fleet of planes sit idle while the government and administrators strive to complete a plan to get the national carrier back in the skies.

 

Burkina Faso's Kabore extends election lead as opposition alleges fraud

Burkina Faso President Roch Kabore held a large lead in early results from the weekend's election, as opposition members of the electoral commission boycotted the process following allegations of fraud.

The results declared by the commission, known as CENI, from 37 out of roughly 360 districts nationwide showed Kabore with over 235 000 votes, more than three times as many as his nearest rival, former finance minister Zephirin Diabre.

The CENI resumed announcing results district by district after a more than 24-hour pause caused by opposition objections.

The standoff further complicates an election already troubled by threats from Islamist militants. Hundreds of thousands of citizens were unable to cast ballots on Sunday because their polling stations were closed for fear of violence.

 

And, sixth Gauteng quality of life survey is underway

Gauteng residents are invited to take part in the sixth iteration of the Quality of Life Survey, which provides information to ensure the effective delivery of services by the provincial and local governments.

Through the survey, Gauteng residents are expected to share their perceptions and experiences of government services and their life in the province.   

Based on a scientifically determined sampling process, randomly selected Gauteng residents are encouraged to be interviewed by registered interviewers.

Over 13 000 adults across all 529 wards of Gauteng will be interviewed.
