ANC MPs heeded the call from chief whip Jackson Mthembu to be in their seats in the National Assembly yesterday and pass the Division of Revenue Amendment bill.

The ANC and the ministerial benches were packed to capacity, in an effort to avoid the embarrassment of the past two sittings last week, when a quorum could not be reached.

The bill serves to make provision for changes in the allocations to provinces and local governments in the current financial year and was passed with 228 votes in favour, 86 votes against, and zero abstentions.

It now goes to the National Council of Provinces for concurrence.

 

Stalwarts of the ANC are preparing for Friday's meeting with the party's national executive committee where they are expected to continue with calls for a renewal of the political party.

They had been deliberating over issues that needed to be addressed when they meet with the committee.

ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe told journalists on the sidelines that the meeting was at times difficult but quite important for the health of the ANC moving forward.

 

The Gupta family maintains that Ajay Gupta did not lie in his interview with journalist Stephen Grootes.

The family said in a statement it had come to their attention that Stephen Grootes reported on 21st November 2016 that 'Ajay Gupta lied' pursuant to an interview conducted on 16th February 2016.

Grootes said some of Gupta's answers were blatant lies, particularly his claims around ministers Des van Rooyen and Mosebenzi Zwane.

The Gupta family said "appropriate steps" would be taken against the journalist.
