Making headlines: Magashule granted bail of R200 000, IEC stands by decision to reject ActionSA registration and, US election officials reject Trump claims of fraud

 

Magashule granted bail of R200 000

ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule was granted bail of R200 000 on Friday as he appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on a raft of fraud and corruption charges.

Magistrate Amos Moos said it was a reasonable amount given the severity of the charges against the former Free State Premier.

The State did not oppose bail, on the grounds that Magashule had fully co-operated with the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation after a warrant for his arrest was issued on Tuesday, and did not pose a flight risk.

 

IEC stands by decision to reject ActionSA registration

The Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa said on Friday that it supported the decision made by its CEO Sy Mamabolo to reject ActionSA’s appeal to be registered as a political party.

The IEC said if the party was still aggrieved by the decision, it may approach the Electoral Court.

The IEC said it had rejected ActionSA’s application owing to logo similarities with another political party and its use of the South African flag in its logo.

 

US election officials reject Trump claims of fraud

US officials have said that there is no evidence of compromised ballots or corrupt voting systems in the US presidential elections.

A top Democrat accused the Republicans who refuse to accept President-elect Joe Biden’s win of “poisoning” democracy.

Senior US federal and state election officials rejected President Donald Trump’s claims of fraud, saying “the November 3 election was the most secure in American history”.

The statement came hours after Trump once again cried foul, retweeting a baseless claim that an election equipment maker “deleted” 2.7-million votes for him nationwide.
