Stage 2 load-shedding begins and Eskom warns the situation could worsen over the weekend

Stage 2 load-shedding began today at 11am after three units at the Kendal power station were taken off.

It expected that the fourth and remaining unit will also be shut down. According to Eskom, the conveyor belts supplying these units are currently not running due to a power fault.

“No coal is reaching the station at this point." Eskom said in a statement.

In addition, units at the Lethabo and Majuba power stations were delayed in returning to service, and a unit at Tutuka tripped.

 

319 new Covid-19 cases as the death toll rises by 31

South Africa recorded 319 new confirmed Covid-19 infections on Thursday and 31 deaths, bringing the confirmed death toll to 89 251.

The NICD reported that 319 new Covid-19 cases represent a 1% positivity rate.

According to the Department of Health, over 22-million vaccine doses have been administered.
To date, over 12-million adults are fully vaccinated.

 

Skull of Homo naledi child discovered at Rising Star cave

The first partial skull of a Homo naledi child, Leti, has been found in a remote passage of the Rising Star cave, in Johannesburg, by a team of international researchers led by University of the Witwatersrand's Professor Lee Berger.

Two papers have been written about the discovery of parts of the skull and teeth of the child that died almost 250 000 years ago when it was about four to six years old.

The child’s skull was found alone and no remains of its body have been recovered.

Since its discovery, the Rising Star cave system has become one of the most prolific sites of discovery for hominin fossils in the world.
