Making headlines: Ace Magashule faces expulsion from ANC; Limpopo records first cholera case; And, SCA dismisses Steenhuisen's appeal against Van Rooyen over Gupta allegations

 

Ace Magashule faces expulsion from ANC

Former African National Congress secretary-general Ace Magashule has been found guilty of contravening the party's constitution when he attempted to suspend Cyril Ramaphosa in 2021. 

The ANC national disciplinary committee recommended that Magashule be expelled from the party for his behaviour. 

He has seven days in which to appeal the ruling and explain why he should not be expelled from the party. 

ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula said today, during a press briefing at Luthuli House, that Magashule's disciplinary case was held earlier in May.

He was allowed to present to the committee regarding his charge sheet and the hearing.

Ahead of his suspension as secretary-general in May 2021, Magashule had led a bitter battle against party leader Ramaphosa. 

 

Limpopo records first cholera case

Limpopo has recorded its first cholera case, according to the provincial Department of Health.

It said a 26-year-old Zimbabwean national reported to Musina Hospital on Friday after experiencing severe symptoms, including vomiting and dehydration. The department said the person was isolated and treated, and was recovering well.

However, the case was not unexpected due to an outbreak in the neighbouring Beitbridge district in Zimbabwe.

The department appealed for calm, adding that health facilities in Bela Bela and the Vhembe district were on high alert.

Meanwhile, the North West health department has clarified that two cholera cases recorded in the Bojanala District Municipality were, in fact, among the cases that were reported in Gauteng.

On Tuesday afternoon, the department reported two positive cholera cases in the province. North West health spokesperson said two people, aged 38 and 68, presented with vomiting and diarrhoea symptoms.

 

And, SCA dismisses Steenhuisen's appeal against Van Rooyen over Gupta allegations

Democratic Alliance leader John Steenhuisen has lost an appeal following the Supreme Court of Appeal's decision to dismiss his application which alleged that former Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister David van Rooyen was guilty of "deliberately" misleading Parliament.

Nearly seven years after posing the question in Parliament to Van Rooyen about his ties and potential relations with the Gupta family, Steenhuisen's court bid ultimately failed.

In 2016, Steenhuisen had asked Van Rooyen whether he had met with the Gupta family at their home in Saxonwold or elsewhere during his stint as minister. 

However, Van Rooyen said neither he nor the deputy ministers met with "members, employees and/or close associates of the Gupta family in their official capacities".

This comment and media reports led Steenhuisen and DA Member of Parliament Kevin Mileham to lodge a complaint with now-suspended Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane, arguing that Van Rooyen deliberately misled Parliament.
