More than 2 500 officers deployed in Pretoria for Ramaphosa inauguration

The Loftus Stadium in Pretoria, which is set to host its first presidential inauguration this weekend, was a hive of activity on Thursday with members of the security forces going through their paces, practising for the Saturday event.

Police Minister Bheki Cele told journalists at the stadium that his officers, supported by metro and traffic police are gearing up for the massive event, billed to attract thousands of South Africans and foreign heads of state.

More than 2 500 police office will be deployed to the area.

Cele said apart from the 40 invited heads of state and other global dignitaries, more people were requesting to come on their own.

 

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde's new cabinet agrees to undergo lifestyle audit

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde announced his new cabinet on Thursday and they have agreed to undergo a lifestyle audit as part of his pledge to build on a good governance track record by setting a new standard for anti-corruption.

Winde said they believe that as public representatives, they must uphold the highest standards of integrity in the execution of their offices.

He said the audits will be performed now, and again at the end of the term.

 

President Mutharika takes the lead in Malawi election

Malawi's President Peter Mutharika has so far taken 40.44% of votes cast in the May 21 presidential election, with 75% of the vote counted, the Electoral Commission said on Thursday.

Lazarus Chakwera, who heads the opposition Malawi Congress Party, has 35.34%, while Deputy President Saulos Chilima has secured 18.35%, the commission told a news conference.

Malawi also held parliamentary elections on Tuesday.
