Ramaphosa to meet with party leaders over lockdown measures,

President Cyril Ramaphosa will today convene his third meeting with leaders of South Africa’s political parties represented in Parliament to discuss the national response to the coronavirus pandemic.

In an effort to be inclusive, Ramaphosa has held meetings and consultations with leaders across various sectors of society since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In March, Ramaphosa met with political party leaders to discuss the pandemic’s impact on businesses and the economy, and sought recommendations to mitigate the impact of Covid-19.

 

UK donates R450-million to African response to pandemic

The African Union’s new Covid-19 response fund has received a R450-million injection from the UK in the fight against the virus, making it the fund’s largest national donor.

The donation will help support the training, recruiting and deployment of African health experts, strengthen global tracking, provide specialist Covid-19 training for health workers and make information more accessible to the public.

Announcing the funding, the UK’s International Development Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan said it has never been more important for the UK to work with its African partners in the fight against the disease.

 

Lesotho's new Prime Minister Moeketsi Majoro sworn in

Moeketsi Majoro was sworn in as Lesotho's new prime minister on Wednesday, a day after his predecessor resigned under pressure over a scandal involving the killing of his wife.

Majoro, who was previously finance minister, took the oath at the king's palace in front of dignitaries.

He will stay in charge until scheduled elections in June 2022.

The 80 year old veteran politician Thomas Thabane, bowed to calls to resign on Tuesday, three months after police named him and his current wife Maesaiah as suspects in the murder of his former spouse Lipolelo in a case that plunged the mountain kingdom into a political crisis.
