Gauteng High Court rules Public Protector's Vrede dairy farm report is unconstitutional

The Gauteng High Court in Pretoria has ruled that Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane failed in her duties to investigate and report on the Vrede dairy project in the Free State.

The Democratic Alliance and the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution applied last year to have Mkhwebane's report on the project declared unconstitutional, and to have it reviewed and set aside.

On Monday the court ruled in their favour and reserved judgment on costs.

Sassa gets new CEO

Social Development Minister Susan Shabangu has appointed former Postbank managing director Busisiwe Memela-Khambula as permanent CEO of the South African Social Security Agency.

Memela-Khambula takes over from acting CEO Abraham Mahlangu. The social grants agency said Memela-Khambula's experience in financial services will come in handy.

Shabangu added that the partnership between Sassa and the South African Post Office to pay social grants is at an early stage and said that Memela-Khambula’s appointment will play a key role in increasing the momentum to ensure that service delivery is enhanced.

ANC NEC meets in Cape Town

The national executive committee of the African National Congress remained locked behind closed doors in Cape Town on Monday to discuss the recently held national elections.

Elections head Fikile Mbalula was expected to provide an analysis of the vote, which saw the ANC emerge as the governing party again after garnering 57 percent of the vote - the first time since the advent of democracy that it dipped below the 60 percent mark.

The meeting was also expected to discuss who would become National Assembly Speaker, National Council of Provinces chairperson and chief whip for the majority party in Parliament.
